Filling in solvable groups and in lattices in semisimple groups
We prove that the filling order is quadratic for a large class of solvable groups and asymptotically quadratic for all Q-rank one lattices in semisimple groups of R-rank at least 3. As a byproduct of auxiliary results we give a shorter proof of the theorem on the nondistorsion of horospheres providing also an estimate of a nondistorsion
متن کاملFive lectures on lattices in semisimple Lie groups
This text is an introduction to lattices in semisimple Lie groups, in five independent lectures. It was given during the first week of the 2004 Summer School at the Fourier Institute in Grenoble. We hope that it will attract young students to this topic and convince them to read some of the many textbooks cited in the references. We illustrate five important methods of this subject: geometry, a...
متن کاملFundamental domains for lattices in rank one semisimple lie groups.
We construct a fundamental domain omega for an arbitrary lattice [unk] in a real rank one, real simple Lie group, where omega has finitely many cusps (i.e., is a finite union of Siegel sets) and has the Siegel property (i.e., the set {gamma [unk] [unk]|omegagamma [unk] omega [unk] varphi} is finite). From the existence of omega we derive a number of consequences. In particular, we show that [un...
متن کاملSubgroup growth of lattices in semisimple Lie groups
Proving a conjecture posed in [5], we give very precise bounds for the congruence subgroup growth of arithmetic groups. This allows us to determine the subgroup growth of irreducible lattices of semisimple Lie groups. In the most general case our results depend on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for number fields but we can state the following unconditional theorem: Let G be a simple Lie gro...
متن کاملDivergence in Lattices in Semisimple Lie Groups and Graphs of Groups
Divergence functions of a metric space estimate the length of a path connecting two points A, B at distance ≤ n avoiding a large enough ball around a third point C. We characterize groups with non-linear divergence functions as groups having cut-points in their asymptotic cones. That property is weaker than the property of having Morse (rank 1) quasi-geodesics. Using our characterization of Mor...
